Lady Gaga Does Vogue

The leaked Lady Gaga cover for the upcoming Vogue is reminiscent of Karen Elson on the cover of Vogue Italia in 1997 – the shot by Steven Meisel that launched her career. It’s a more modern look for the mag AND I LIKE IT.

You could also say that Vogue was channeling a little Lynn Yaeger, as PAPER’s Editorial Director Mickey Boardman pointed out. Either way, it’s a hot one and you best believe I’ll be picking it up.

J.Crew Pawns Prada

I enjoy perusing the J.Crew catalogues. Under the stewardship of über-chic Jenna Lyons, the brand’s visuals are consistently strong and on point. But this shot in September’s catalogue looked a touch derivative to me. Maybe because it reminded me of another campaign? Maybe one of the best campaigns of the last decade?! That would be Prada Spring 2005, an utterly flawless series, shot by Steven Meisel and starring several dynamic beauties (most notably, the sublime Karen Elson). The similarities are striking: the pose, the fly-away hair, the hat, the burnt colors and patterns. Essentially the mood of it all.
As a creative director and stylist, you draw inspiration from everywhere. You absorb everything. Maybe someone over at J.Crew just happened to be channeling the best of the best? Either way, get reacquainted with Prada’s real-deal campaign after the jump.
